Syndication
The syndication services are designed to meet a broad spectrum of publisher needs. Feed & Tag Syndication is designed for when a publisher wants new feeds of content. Tag-only Syndication applies when a publisher already syndicates feeds of content outside of the iCopyright system but wishes to empower that syndicated content with the iCopyright services by embedding the iCopyright toolbar.
FEED & TAG SYNDICATION
This is a two-way service where you can both offer a feed of content to other publishers and you can subscribe to feeds of content from other publishers.
The service allows subscribers to instantly license an ongoing feed of content from a publisher for posting on their website. The subscriber pays the content owner for this feed based on the number of times the syndicated content is viewed on the subscriber’s website. The content owner sets the amount he gets paid for the content on a per-thousand-page-views (also called “CPM’) basis.
To measure how many times the content is viewed by the subscriber’s readers, iCopyright inserts an invisible page view counter in the article feed. The iCopyright toolbar is displayed along with each article in the feed, allowing the subscriber’s readers to click on the toolbar to obtain the rights to reuse the content yet again. The Net Revenue from such toolbar transactions on the subscriber’s site is split (after deducting iCopyright’s commission) between the content owner and the subscriber according to percentages set by the content owner. The services that are offered via the toolbar and the prices for these services are preset by the content owner.
So content owners earn revenues from syndication feeds (1) based on pages views of their content on a subscriber’s site, and (2) when readers on the subscriber’s site execute licensing transactions by clicking the iCopyright toolbar on one of the owner’s articles displayed by the subscriber. Conversely, subscribers earn money from syndication feeds if their subscription cost is exceeded by (1) revenue from ads they place alongside the syndicated content, and (2) their share of revenue from licensing transactions when their readers click on the iCopyright toolbar. (Of course, for many websites, displaying syndicated content will have additional important benefits beyond these direct revenue impacts.)
As a condition of receiving the feed, subscribers promise not to impair the iCopyright toolbar or the page view counter, or to amend the articles they post.
When establishing a feed, subscribers input the topics on which they would like to receive articles. These topics can be changed at any time in Conductor. Some publishers also allow subscribers to get a full feed of their content rather than requiring specific topics. Feeds can be subscribed to either from the iCopyright toolbar or from within the Syndication module of Conductor. A subscriber who wants several publications to be combined into a single feed, or who wants more advanced abilities to manipulate search terms, can find that flexibility in Conductor.
→ TO OFFER FEEDS OF YOUR CONTENT TO OTHER PUBLISHERS:
To offer a feed of your content for syndication by others, go to your Conductor console, click on Publications ①, select Services ② and then click on [settings] ③ for Republish.
↓
On the Republish services page, there will be a list of “Active” services, and “Inactive” services. To activate the syndication feed service, under “Inactive Services”, click on [settings] ④ adjacent to Get Syndication Feed.
At the top of the Get Syndication Feed page, click on the upper radio button ⑤ to enable iCopyright as the Partner. If instead you wish to turn off the service, click on “None”.
Under “Feed Pricing” ⑥ set the amount you wish to receive for every 1,000 times an article of yours is viewed on a subscriber’s site.
The iCopyright toolbar, with your prices and service settings, will float with your article to the subscriber’s site. Under “iCopyright Toolbar Revenue Split” you specify how Net Revenues from toolbar transactions of your articles on a subscriber’s site are split between you and your subscriber. Don’t be a hog – you want to give others an incentive to syndicate your content! The default setting is 50/50.
If you click the “require keywords” box, then subscribers will be required to enter specific keywords and will get articles only on related topics. If you don’t check this box, subscribers have the option of getting all your content or just articles related to keywords they specify.
For publishers with multiple publications, click on the “Apply to All Publications” link if you want to enable syndication, as well as apply these parameters to all of your publications.
Click on OK at the bottom to save your changes. This is very important!
You can view the changes you just made either by going to your website or by clicking on the sample tag on your Conductor Services screen. Click on Republish and then Get Syndication Feed to see what your readers will see.
You should then see the form displayed to readers who wish to syndicate your content.
{Please note that the fee per thousand page views shown on this form will be higher than the fee you specified when you set up your syndication service; this reflects the mark-up that iCopyright assesses to administer the service.}
As with your other iCopyright licensing transactions, we take care of transaction tracking, invoicing, and revenue allocation.
→ TO SUBSCRIBE TO FEEDS OF CONTENT FROM OTHER PUBLISHERS:
FOR EXISTING ICOPYRIGHT PUBLISHERS:
In Conductor, click on Syndication. Select Feed and Tag Syndication. This takes you to a page where you can create a new syndication feed. In the box type the publication you would like to subscribe to or keywords describing the type of publications you would like to choose from.
A list of relevant publications will be displayed. If you don’t see the publication you want, check back again in the future; our base of participating publishers is growing all the time. You will see the fee listed on a CPM (thousand-page-view) basis. You are charged based on how many times articles you subscribe to are viewed on your site. You will also see how that publication is offering to split Net Revenues with you when a toolbar transaction occurs on one of their articles displayed on your site.
Select the publications you like by clicking “Add”. Then click “NEXT”. On the next page, enter search terms related to the topics of articles you would like to receive. Some publishers allow you to get a feed of all their articles, and in those cases you don’t have to enter search terms if you want a complete feed. Click “OK” to save your search terms, and then “NEXT”.
On the next page enter the website where you would like permission to display the syndicated content. The URL should begin with “http://”. Select your feed format, either RSS or HTML. Then after reviewing the terms of use and related verbage, click the box to consent to the terms. Click “NEXT”.
You are then presented with the URL where your feed will be populated. You can click to see the feed; it may take a minute or two to populate. You will also have been emailed a confirmation containing a summary of the terms of your new syndication fee, the URL where the feed is located, and so forth.
Experienced website administrators will know how to ingest these feeds into their content management systems. If you are unsure what to do, and use either Drupal, Joomla or WordPress, click the icon of your CMS below to see a video with tips on ingesting the feed to your CMS.
Once you have created a feed you can click on that feed on the left menu in order to delete it or modify the search terms, included publications, feed format, and so on.

If you are a Producer of content (publisher, author, etc.), click on Specify Terms ① to set Revenue Splits and the Terms of Use. As described earlier, you can accept the default Terms or edit them to meet your specific needs.
Click on Invite Distributors to notify your distributors of the agreement. The distributor will agree to or reject your invitation. If agreed, they will be included in the Manage Distributors section.
If you are a Distributor of content, click on Specify Terms ② to set Revenue Splits and the Terms of Use. As described earlier, you can accept the default Terms or edit them to meet your specific needs.
